I am the mother of three wonderfully spirited children and the wife of an incredibly hard-working man, whom I met at age 18 and married at 22. After a decade of volunteering for my community in a wide variety of roles, I’ve finally begun to officially work as a freelance writer.
I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to write. In elementary school, I met award-winning author Ivy Ruckman and thought she had the coolest job. In high school, I wrote for The Lance, my school newspaper, as Entertainment Writer and Columnist. After my sophomore year, I attended journalism camp at the University of Kansas; it sealed my fate. I went on to attend KU, meet my husband and graduate summa cum laude with a BS in Journalism.
Two months after college graduation, I got married and began a career in public relations. At Boasberg\Wheeler Communications, I worked mainly on the Interstate Bakeries account and no two days were alike. I did everything from act as the Hostess Spokeswoman on national cable programs including “Snacks Unwrapped” and the “Top Ten Fun Food Factories” to perform as Twinkie the Kid (when the actual mascot was stuck in a traffic jam).
When my husband’s career took us to North Carolina, I became the Director of Public Relations for PAVE Creative Group in Winston-Salem. I enjoyed working on a marketing and media relations campaign for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools and managing a variety of other accounts. After the arrival of our first two children (nineteen months apart!), I continued to freelance as a Writer and Project Manager.
When it came time to finally settle down, the stars aligned and I was able to bring my family “home” to Omaha. A couple years later, we were blessed with our youngest son. In my free time, I can be found struggling on the tennis court or in a yoga studio, drinking dark coffee, reading, or taking photographs of my family as the time whizzes by. . .
I didn’t know quite a bit of that Kara! I love learning about you.

Kara, you seem to have lived the life I wanted to! I started in pre-Journalism at the University of Regina but the new program was delayed and I got very sick one semester and fell way behind. As often happens, I never was able to go back. And I wanted a big family, but again health matters squashed that one. But I have got my writing back and that’s very important to me. Thanks for sharing this and for checking out my blog. I look forward to following you.

Was it John Lennon who said, “Life is What Happens To You While You’re Busy Making Other Plans?” Despite your unexpected twists and turns, I’m glad that you’ve gotten back to writing – you are proof that you don’t need a degree to be a great writer. I look forward to following your journey.
